Koji Yakusho is one of Japan’s most distinguished screen actors, widely respected for his commanding presence and exceptional range. Inspired by a 1976 production of The Lower Depths starring Tatsuya Nakadai, he entered the profession after being selected from 800 applicants for Nakadai’s Mumeijuku acting studio in 1978. His portrayal of Oda Nobunaga in the 1983 NHK drama Tokugawa Ieyasu brought him broad recognition and established him as a formidable talent.

He went on to build an acclaimed body of work across film and television, with notable performances in Miyamoto Musashi, Sanbiki ga Kiru!, Tampopo, The Eel, Lost Paradise, and Shall We Dance?. In 1988, he received a special award for cinema from Japan’s Minister of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, while his mid-1990s successes and international breakthrough confirmed his status as a leading figure in Japanese and global cinema.
